I am a simple man living in Britain. I say I am simple because to me elections are simple. We have constituencies and whoever candidate gets the most votes in the constituency wins.
America is not so simple. The popular vote is not the one that elects the president. Each state has voted in an Electoral College and it is this that counts. It is possible to lose the popular vote but win in the electoral college. In 2016 Trump lost the popular vote but won in the college. The same was true of Abraham Lincon in the 19th century.
At the time of writing the winner has not been declared, but the electoral college and courts look like they will be critical. Those who oversee these things have a huge responsibility. Watch this space.
