Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has criticized his team’s display on Thursday evening after they were knocked out by RB Leipzig in the Champions League quarter-final.
Diego Simeone’s side were the favourites after knocking out holders Liverpool in the round of 16 right before football was put to hold due to Coronavirus.
But RB Leipzig had too much in their locker for them as the Spanish club struggled in the game even after Jao Felix gave them the equaliser through a penalty in the 71st minute after Dani Olmo’s first half goal, yet Tyler Adams’ goal late in the game saw off Atletico from the Champions league.
Saul as per Football Espana told El Chiringuito: ‘It hurts to lose, but our rivals were better in the game. They raised the tempo and we did not know how to react.
‘They were superior to us, and at times we were not even close to stopping them.’
His team mate Koke agreed with his comments admitting they were outplayed by the German side.
‘They were better and more intense throughout the whole game. We have to congratulate them for that,’ he said.
‘We had a lot of hopes of winning the Champions League, however, they were better tonight. But we will recover and come back from this.’
The bookies favoured Simeone’s side to make the semi-final to play PSG but their defeat add up to their recent poor run in the Champions League in recent years with just one semi-final in their last five campaigns.
RB Leipzig will play against PSG on August 18 with Barcelona or Bayern Munich taking on either of Manchester City or Lyon in the other semi-final game.
